"Rafiki..." she whispered, "I do not know how much longer my body will take this wear and tear every day... I am really sick and I fear my time has come."
"No..." Rafiki sighed, "Not yet Sarabi. You are the wise Queen, the rightful Queen over the Pridelands. You can't give up this easily."
"I have no choice... I am starving and sick. There is nothing I can do... anymore..."
Basking in the daylight under Pride Rock Rafiki waited in silence for his friend to speak further. The wind whipped gently around them, dust following across the dry land.
"Yes my Queen?"
"Are you hiding something from me? I feel your quieter than usual..."
Looking down in fear the baboon whispered, "Sarabi... I fear their will be a new heir to this awful kingdom... Zira is expecting... and Scar has asked me to make sure their cub is healthy once it is born."
Gasping Sarabi pulled her head up in a quick jerk, "NO!"
Zira was sprawled out on the edge of Pride Rock sun bathing, her stomach plump with a healthy cub inside her. Scar sauntered towards her with a grin; their eyes meeting.
"Good afternoon my King."
"Ahhh Zira, I am glad to see that the lioness's have been keeping you well fed for the last few months. Our cub must be ready to be born soon." Scar chuckled.
"Yes my King I feel the cub should be along within the next couple days. It has been kicking and moving in me for quite some time now."
"I am quite pleased to hear that. You had better hope it is a male cub or else you know what you shall have to endure if it is not."
Zira gulped nervously, feeling Scar stare through her with his piercing emerald eyes, "No worries my King. I am sure it will be a male, for a strong King like yourself deserves a rightful heir."
Leaning down Scar brushed up against Zira purring as he gently caressed her with his tongue. Suddenly Zira let out a roar, cringing as pain enveloped her body. Scar took a step back in surprise with shock on his face.
"Get me in the den!" Zira cried, her claws digging into the rock beneath her.
"Zira get up! Hurry before something else happens."
Scar was overthrown by panic as he paced back and forth not realizing what was happening. Whining Zira let out another snarl, "Scar, the cub it coming!"
Leaning down towards Zira again Scar questioned, "What can I do to help you Zira?"
"Leave!" she snapped, showing her teeth.
Backing away Scar took off leaping down Pride Rock in a hurry, "I need to find that stupid baboon! She may need his help!"
"Rafiki, we can't let Zira bear a child! Especially not one of Scar's!" Sarabi stammered pushing herself into a sitting position.
Sighing the baboon put an arm around Sarabi, "I realize that my dear but there is nothing we can do now. Mufasa and Simba are only with us in the stars now. We have no one to over throw Scar, ZIra and his hyenas. We are outnumbered at this point and time..."
"We're all going to parish... I give up..."
Letting her frail body collapse, dust flew out from under her as the wind gently took it away.
"Sarabi get up! You can't do this... the Queen I knew wouldn't give up so easily."
"I am not the Queen no more Rafiki, get that through your head..."
Surprised Rafiki jumped in fear turning to see Scar sauntering towards them. Bowing Rafiki asked, "Yes my King?"
"I am in need of your service wise baboon. My mate is giving birth as we speak and I'd like you to make sure that it is a young healthy cub for me."
Hearing that statement Sarabi's eyes snapped open in fear realizing that there was nothing she could do now to take over the Pridelands again. Rafiki sadly glanced down at Sarabi hearing Scar snap, "What's wrong with the old coon?"
"My King she is very ill and too weak to hunt now. She has no energy to hardly move."
Growling Scar loomed over Sarabi, his ginger pelt bright in the sunlight, "She is useless then. If she can't hunt and provide for my new family then there is no need to have her around. You hear me Sarabi! You'd better get up and hunt by the morning tomorrow or else the hyenas will rip you limb from limb."
Whining Sarabi closed her eyes thinking, "Anything is better than this hell..."
Following Scar Rafiki grasped his walking stick whispering back to Sarabi, "Stay strong my friend."
"Stay away from the Queen for a few minutes my King until I assess the cub please."
Rafiki kindly stated walking towards Zira who was sprawled out on the end of Pride Rock where Scar had left her.
Sitting a distance away Scar waited to see the cub without a smile wondering whether it was going to be his rightful heir or not in the future to come. Rafiki gave a weary smile to Zira allowing her to see he was there to help.
"Good afternoon my Queen, may I see your newborn to assess him?" the baboon questioned.
Zira glared at him, her red eyes softening when she noticed it was the baboon and not Scar, "I suppose so but be gentle. My cub is only a few minutes old remember?"
"Of course my Queen I wouldn't handle your cub any other way."
Looking around Zira, Rafiki seen the small cub sitting in her arms with his bright eyes staring up at him. He was a light mocha color with red eyes that resembled Zira's followed by a thin build to his tiny body.
Rafiki reached down stroking the young cub as he pawed at the baboon's fingers, "Zira, he is beautiful but I fear he seems to be small for a newborn. He looks like a preemie and will need extra attention for next few weeks. Make sure to also eat plenty of food or else your body won't produce enough milk to suffice the needs of this young one."
Licking the top of the cubs head gently Zira smiled, "Thank you baboon I am very pleased to hear that he will at least be alright."
Scar inched closer trying to get a look at the cub, "Zira, my Queen, is it alright if I see your cub now?"
Grinning Zira purred, "Why yes my King. I believe you will be very pleased with this cub."
Sauntering forward Scar looked around the baboon seeing a the little male who twitched his ears staring at him amazed. Letting a low rumble echo in his throat Scar reached down pinching the cub's tail picking him up in the air.
"This is is?" Scar stated in a blunt tone.
Confused Zira sat up, "What do you mean is this it?"
"Zira, this is a runt. I want a suitable heir not a preemie to run my kingdom! This is unacceptable for my standards!"
"But, but, my King! He will grow healthy and strong I swear upon it!
"We will see Zira but because you have practically failed me if another chance comes along I will mate with other lioness's. I want a healthy strong heir."
"My King no! Please don't choose another heir. I bore you a male like you had wanted."
"Enough Zira, raise this little runt and we will see what the future brings us!"
Scar placed the cub back into Zira's arms before walking away unsatisfied. Caressing the cub with her tongue Zira whispered, "Don't worry my son. You will grow up healthy and strong once I am done training you. Scar will be satisfied with you if it's the last thing I do."
The cub giggled at Zira replying with a weak, "Mew! Mew!"
"Your name shall be Nuka."
